Building a cleaner future for India.

When I used to stay in Alibag, my mother always tried to achieve a ecological balance when it came to garbage processing. I remember her segregating wet waste from dry waste. Since we lived in a house (not apartment) we used to make compost of our wet waste and use it for gardening. Since we had enough space, all the dry waste was accumulated and then given to bhangarwala (Scrap dealer). I would not deny that we did not use plastic but whatever was used we made sure to recycle as much as we can. These were the first lessons I got regarding being eco friendly and creating a sustainable environment.

Now we we don't live in cities we dont live in houses but we stay in apartments which has small spaces. Our waste management system generally involves dumping the collected garbage into a barren land. We rarely go for waste processing i.e. recycle and reuse. Pune generates 1600 -1700 tons of solid waste per day. Its high time that we devise some methods at grass root level that can leverage the waste processing.

Wet waste

If you live in your own house making compost can be easy. However if you stay in an apartment, you have to find some options. First and foremost, try to segregate wet waste from dry waste.

1)Compost maker: This looks just like dust bin. It comes with compost bin and compost powder. You can put your kitchen waste in the bin make compost and use it for gardening your plants in your balcony

2)Wet waste collection sites: If you stay in PMC or PCMC area, you will have many sites which collect wet waste from your doorstep. These sites then accumulate the wet waste and make compost on a larger level. For Puneigers, I would recommend the following site. Mobitrash. They will also give you a three day free trial. Also you can search on Just Dial for different wet waste collection agencies in your suburb.

3)Compost Machine: If you live in a big society you can buy a compost machine and make compost internally for the whole society.

Dry Waste

Recycling is the only option for dry waste. Plastic has become such an integral part of our life that we literally cannot ban plastic but we can at least minimise the use of plastics.

1)Carry bags: Always carry bags made of cloth while buying vegetables.

2)Use of eco friendly dishes: Stop using thermacol and plastic dishes, glasses and bowls. Instead go for eco friendly dishes.

3)Junk: All the junk that is generated in your household sell them to scrap dealer/bhangarwala.

4)E-waste: There are lot of sites which collect dry waste including e-waste like Kachra Dabba. Even the mobile shops have e waste collections drive so look out for them.

We have already exploited our mother earth to extreme level. If we need a better future for our kids we have to create a sustainable environment. We have to imbibe all this in the minds our kids so that living sustainable life should become a necessity not a choice.
